How we remembered World War I PALS

During the centenary anniversary of the start of World War I, The Royal Armouries in Leeds approached us to create a communication for a fundraising event to support an exhibition about World War I. Knowing the significance of the PALS regiments in Yorkshire and other industrial, working-class communities, we focused our attention on the very personal stories behind the tragedy of war.

Archive imagery of a local Yorkshire PALS regiment was married to a powerful editorial reinforcing the individual narratives, summarised by ‘Your neighbour, your brother, your son, your pal.’ The haunting image of young men gathered together as friends and neighbours, ready to head off to France and battle, was a powerful means of engaging those people we wanted to attend the event.
